Our entire team is first aid and CPR-certified. We always have first-aid kits in the boat and in our packs on backcountry trips. We’re always within cell service on the San Juan River, and our high-country trips are on private property with easy access to amenities.

Fishing FAQs

Do we need a fishing license?

Yes! You will need a New Mexico fishing license for your trip with us. Children 11 and under do not need a license.

Depending on the trip, you’ll catch brown trout, rainbow trout, brook trout, and cutthroat trout.

While we cannot guarantee you’ll catch a certain number of fish, we 100% guarantee that our guides will work as hard as possible to get you on fish. We pride ourselves on a hard-working team of excellent teachers and patient instructors.

Our fish are our business partners. About Trout is a catch-and-release operation.

We provide all terminal tackle, rods, reels, lines, tippets, and flies. We’ve got you covered using only the best equipment.

The only gear we do not provide is waders and boots. If you do not have a set, we have them available for rent.

Of course! We know that fly anglers have their favorite setup, and we welcome you to bring it. Be sure to check with your airlines to ensure you’re adhering to all travel regulations.

What do we need to pack?

Check out our Trip Planning page for more details on what to bring. Clothing and gear can vary by the trip type and the season. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have.

The San Juan River is located in Navajo Dam, NM. The two closest air ports are Durango (DRO) 50 minutes and Albuquerque (ABQ) 3.5 Hours. Albuquerque is the closest large airport to the San Juan and the drive is almost all highway. Flying into Durango is a great option but be warned that during the Winter and Spring months weather delays can impede your travel.

We have partnered with local New Mexico fishing lodges to provide all-inclusive stays and fishing packages. There are also several other local accommodations we recommend on our lodging page.
